For example, when Tonya Lewis Lee wrote the script for The Watsons Go To Birmingham, she changed the age of Byron to be older than it is in the book. Another change Lee made was to include SCENE 11 (which does not exist in the book). In Scene 11 (below), the Watson children are in the living room watching television while their mother, Wilona, is making a grocery list in the kitchen. During this time, a historically accurate news broadcast report about the Children’s Crusade in Birmingham comes on the television. The news captures the attention of Byron and Wilona as the reporter tells us what is going on.
*Read Scene 11 and answer the following questions in small groups. Groups need submit one answer sheet with proper heading. Answers must be in complete sentences. #2 and #3 must include story details to support your answer. 1. Why would the scriptwriters include this scene? 2. Why is the Children’s Crusade in Birmingham significant for the Watsons? 3. Does the scene meaningfully support the overall plot of the book? In what ways?
